Protect Our Dark Skies

Help reduce light pollution and preserve our wild, night skies!

Many of the darkest night skies in New York are found within the Adirondack Park. The Park’s vast expanses of undeveloped, protected Forest Preserve lands and high elevation provide unobstructed views and make it an ideal location for observing the night sky. Dark skies offer an unparalleled opportunity for stargazing, support vital ecological processes and promote human well-being. Unfortunately, excessive artificial lighting, also known as light pollution, is threatening the quality of the night sky, our ability to enjoy it and the wild character of the Adirondacks.

Unlike other forms of pollution, light pollution is 100% reversible. You can play a role in helping reclaim the wild, night sky. We can limit the negative effects of excessive artifical lights by following responsible outdoor lighting practices (downward-cast or shielded lighting, timed or motion-activated lighting, and warm-colored lighting choices) and supporting the passage of the Dark Skies Protection Act in New York. Your gift of support will help us educate the public and policymakers about the impacts of light pollution and help advance meaningful legislation that will help preserve dark skies in the Adirondacks and beyond.
